5 Easy Swaps for Shopping Sustainably

Warehouse Sale

Warehouse Sale

Pop-Up Shoe Store

You’ve done all the easy swaps: bought the metal straws, gone vegetarian, haven’t even breathed on a plastic bag in months.

But you might not know that the fashion industry produces 4% of the world’s waste every year (that’s 92 million tons!!!)

The Warehouse Sale (pop-up shoe store) is an easy swap to reduce your carbon footprint because we turn returned orders and overstock inventory into new shoes up to 80% off for you.

BUT, when we’re not around, there are other easy swaps you can do today:

Try Mercari, Poshmark, or Depop (if you’re a hip) for what you’re looking for first before buying new.

I like to also browse Facebook marketplace and buy/sell/trade Facebook groups in my area first too before buying new. You’ll start to equate the concept of retail markups with that one bad dream you had about your ex last week – useless and disappointing

There’s a German upcycled industrial brand called Freitag that I always think of when I’m considering investing in a posh new vinyl backpack.

Invest in high-quality upcycled items and you won’t need to replace your stuff as often! Try Alchemy, TRMTAG, or RE/DONE.

Last month, I bought $200 handmade linen sheets from a woman in Minsk… I’m not saying you have to go to this extreme because honestly, maybe I shouldn’t even have.

BUT, that money went straight to her business and improved her life and I felt amazing about that! So much of a product’s cost goes to big business profit margins it’s ridiculous.

Try Etsy or another small business marketplace instead.

I recently organized a clothing swap in my community instead of selling my clothes online because I simply could not be bothered to make all those listings.

My clothes went to new and loving homes, while I got to feel like I was shopping but not spend a single dime. It’s like fast fashion if fast fashion weren’t the worst thing to happen to the 21st century, ever.

Brands like Pact, Everlane, Reformation, and Alternative Apparel use eco-friendly or carbon-neutral processes, organic cotton, and recycled materials and fibers.

LOOK INTO THE BRAND.

Where are they sourcing their materials?

How are they disposing of waste?

Do they advertise any sort of trade/return program to recycle their own product?

(Think Madewell’s denim-to-insulation incentive)

Basically, if you can cut down on the number of new items you consume and the shipping impact of those items, then you’re doing amazing sweetie.

And, of course, if you’re in the market for new shoes, check to see when the Warehouse Sale is in your area. Let’s spare the landfills a couple hundred more pairs of unworn brand name shoes, shall we?
